Is It Safe to Play a MapleStory Private Server? An Honest Answer

No. A private server is completely separate from the official game and Nexon. You make a brand-new account on the private server; it has no connection to your official MapleStory login, and playing here cannot ban your official account.

You do not enter your Nexon credentials anywhere. A private server that ever asked for your official password would be a scam — Zipangu never does.

The client itself is a normal game client, not malware. The confusion usually comes from Windows SmartScreen and antivirus software flagging it — not because it is dangerous, but because private-server clients are unsigned (they do not have a paid code-signing certificate) and inject a small DLL to talk to the server. That behavior looks unusual to antivirus heuristics, so you get a false-positive warning.

This is the single most common worry, and it is a false alarm. The fix is simply to download only from the official links and, if your antivirus quarantines a file, add the game folder as an exclusion so it stops deleting parts of the client.
