Cannoneer Class Guide & Build

The Cannoneer is one of the most beginner-friendly and genuinely fun classes you can roll on Zipangu, the free MapleStory v117.2 server. Wielding a giant hand cannon (and a parrot named Bao), the Cannon Shooter is a Pirate-branch explorer with huge survivability, wide-arc mobbing, and almost no awkward early game. This MapleStory Cannoneer guide covers the full build v117 — from your first cannonball to Cannon Buster — plus training, the link skill, and bossing.

Why Play a Cannoneer on Zipangu?

The Cannoneer is the easy-mode Pirate. It uses STR as its main stat (so gearing overlaps with Warriors and other STR classes), has naturally high HP, and starts each life with a permanent Cannon weapon — no fishing for a class-specific drop. On Zipangu's fair 2x EXP / 1x meso / 1x drop rates, that survivability matters: you take fewer deaths, lose less EXP, and can grind comfortably without a baby-sitter.

Mechanically the Cannoneer fires explosive cannonballs that hit in a wide forward arc, making it excellent at clearing packed mobs. It also keeps Bao the parrot as a summon and gains generous passive boosts, so even sub-optimal play feels strong. If you want a Pirate that just works, this is it.

💡

Tip: Cannoneer shares STR-based armor and weapons with other Pirate/Warrior gear, so leftovers from a main can kit out your new Cannoneer cheaply on Zipangu's player-driven economy.

Creating Your Cannoneer & Stat Build

Cannoneer starts on its own tutorial island and advances through the standard Pirate job track (1st → 2nd → 3rd → 4th). The class is created from the Explorer/Pirate selection — pick the Cannon Shooter path when you make the character on Zipangu.

Your stat allocation is simple and the same as most physical Pirates:

  • Main stat: STR — pump everything here. Cannoneer damage scales off STR.
  • Secondary: DEX — only what your weapon/gear requires to equip it; do not free-pour DEX.
  • Never add LUK or INT — those are for Thieves and Mages.
  • Rule of thumb: keep adding STR every level; only stop to meet a DEX equip requirement, then go back to STR.

Skill Build by Job (1st–4th)

Below is a sensible skill-point priority in general terms. Always max your core single-target and mobbing attacks first, then utility, then the 'nice to have' passives. Exact point counts vary, so prioritize in this order rather than memorizing numbers.

  • 1st Job: Get your main Cannon Blaster attack going early, then put points into the mobility/dash and passive mastery so you can move and clear. Survivability passives come once your attack is functional.
  • 2nd Job: Prioritize your upgraded primary attack and Cannon Booster (attack speed) — booster is huge for clear rate. Then max weapon mastery and the relevant damage passive. Pick up Monkey Magic / utility buffs after your damage line is maxed.
  • 3rd Job: Max your new flagship mobbing skill and your spread/barrage attack first, then the big damage passive and your summon/parrot upgrade. Take Mana/recovery utility last.
  • 4th Job: Cannon Buster is your endgame bossing skill — max it as soon as it's available. Then max your final damage/crit passives and your overload-style toggle buffs for higher line counts. Hyper skills round out the build at higher levels.
💡

Tip: Don't sleep on Cannon Booster in 2nd job — attack speed multiplies every other skill you have. Maxing it early makes the whole class feel twice as smooth.

Training Spots & Leveling on Zipangu

Because Cannoneer mobs so well, you want maps with dense, tightly-packed spawns that line up in its wide firing arc. The class follows the normal GMS leveling curve, so the standard Big-Bang training route applies on Zipangu.

General progression (use whatever's populated and matches your level):

  • Early levels: clear the tutorial chain, then standard low-level theme dungeons and Henesys/Gold Beach style hunting grounds.
  • Mid levels: Party Quests are great EXP and social — try Kerning PQ, Ludibrium PQ (LPQ) and Monster Carnival (CPQ) as you hit their level ranges.
  • High levels: move to dense grinding maps appropriate to your level and farm steadily — 2x EXP makes consistent grinding pay off.
  • Always use your Cannon Booster and parrot summon before pulling a big mob group for max clear speed.

Cannoneer Link Skill: Pirate Blessing

Cannoneer's biggest meta value is its link skill, Pirate Blessing, which grants flat boosts to attack, magic attack, HP, MP, accuracy and avoidability. It's one of the most universally useful link skills in the game because it helps literally every class.

If you main another character on Zipangu, leveling a Cannoneer to unlock and link Pirate Blessing onto your main is a worthwhile project. Even as a standalone class, the Cannoneer's own buffs and high base HP make it a sturdy, low-maintenance character.

Bossing as a Cannoneer

Cannoneer is a strong, durable bosser thanks to high HP and Cannon Buster as a reliable single-target nuke. On Zipangu the early-to-mid boss progression is the classic GMS storyline.

Key targets and prep:

  • Zakum — the rite-of-passage boss. Enter via the Zakum altar after collecting the required Eye of Fire items. Watch for seal/debuff attacks and the arms phase; bring all-cure and use ranged positioning. Strong gear like a face accessory drops here.
  • Horntail — multi-stage head fight requiring solid HP and status resistance; party recommended. Cannoneer's HP pool helps you survive the seduce/curse mechanics while you DPS.
  • Pink Bean & the Black Mage storyline — the endgame chase. Work through the Temple of Time questline and gear up; Cannoneer's survivability is a real asset in long, mechanic-heavy fights.
  • Prep checklist: attack potions/food, all-cure or holy water for status, enough HP to eat a hit, and your booster/summon active before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cannoneer good for beginners in MapleStory v117?

Yes — Cannoneer is one of the easiest classes to start on Zipangu. It uses simple STR-based gearing, has high HP for fewer deaths, starts with a permanent Cannon weapon, and clears mobs in a wide arc, so the early game is smooth and forgiving.

What stats should a Cannoneer add?

Pure STR. Add STR every level and only put the minimum DEX needed to meet your weapon and armor equip requirements. Never add LUK or INT on a Cannoneer.

What is the Cannoneer link skill?

Pirate Blessing — it gives flat boosts to attack, magic attack, HP, MP, accuracy and avoidability. Because it helps every class, many players on Zipangu level a Cannoneer just to link it onto their main.

Is Zipangu pay-to-win?

No. Zipangu is a free v117.2 server with strictly no pay-to-win, fair 2x EXP / 1x meso / 1x drop rates, a player-driven economy, and RustHS anti-cheat. Progress comes from playing, not paying.
