Aran Class Guide & Build

The Aran is one of MapleStory's most satisfying classes to play: a polearm-swinging Hero of Maple whose entire kit is built around chaining attacks into a snowballing Combo Count. On Zipangu, our free v117.2 (Big-Bang era) server, the Aran rewards players who learn to keep their combo alive with huge mobbing power and smooth, momentum-driven movement. This guide covers the Aran build from beginner island to 4th job, how the combo system actually works, and the best ways to level and boss on Zipangu.

Why Play Aran on Zipangu?

The Aran is a melee STR warrior who fights with a polearm and a unique resource called the Combo Count. Instead of relying on a single spammed skill, you string attacks together; the longer your combo runs, the more your damage and special finishers scale. It feels less like clicking one button and more like keeping a rhythm going.

On Zipangu specifically, the Aran shines because our rates are fair rather than inflated (2x EXP, 1x Meso, 1x Drop). That means combo uptime, mob-density spots and good positioning actually matter for leveling speed, which is exactly what the Aran is designed to exploit. No pay-to-win shortcuts, no donor stat boosts: your Aran is as strong as your build and your hands.

💡

Tip: Aran is a great first character if you enjoy melee and movement. If you prefer ranged safety or burst-on-cooldown gameplay, try a Bowman or a Luminous instead.

How the Aran Combo System Works

Every basic Aran attack adds to your Combo Count, shown above your character. As the count climbs it passes thresholds that buff your stats and unlock stronger Combo finisher skills. Let the combo drop and you start the climb over again, so the core skill of the class is simply: never stop hitting something.

Combo Ability and the Combo Recharge mechanic let you maintain or rebuild the count, which is why Aran feels so smooth once it clicks. In v117 the goal is to keep your count high before you fire off your big combo skills, then ride momentum through a whole map of monsters.

  • Keep attacking continuously to grow the Combo Count, never let it reset mid-fight.
  • Higher combo tiers unlock and empower your Combo finisher attacks.
  • Use Combo Recharge / maintenance skills to hold the count between mob packs.
  • On bosses, build the count on summons or adds first, then unload.

Aran Build & Skill Priority (1st to 4th Job)

Aran is a pure STR build: pour your AP into STR and leave DEX at base (your gear and the small natural DEX gain are enough to meet weapon requirements). Don't add LUK or INT. Below is a sensible skill-point priority in general terms, no invented numbers, just the order most Arans benefit from.

The theme across all four jobs is the same: max your main mobbing attack and your combo-maintenance tools first, then top up passives and utility. This keeps your leveling fast and your combo uptime high while you grind on Zipangu.

  • 1st Job: Prioritise your core polearm attack skill and the basic combo builder, then movement/utility. Get comfortable chaining hits early.
  • 2nd Job: Max your primary mobbing skill and your mastery/accuracy passive first; put points into your combo-boosting and recovery skills next.
  • 3rd Job: Focus your main combo finisher and the buffs that raise combo damage; add survivability and movement skills after your damage is online.
  • 4th Job: Max your strongest combo-tier skill and its supporting passives (final attack, mastery, defensive buffs) for both grinding and bossing.
  • Stat points: every level → STR. DEX, LUK, INT stay at base.
💡

Tip: When unsure which skill to max next, ask: 'Does this help me hit more monsters or keep my combo alive?' If yes, it's a priority.

Leveling Path on Zipangu (2x EXP)

Arans start on a dedicated beginner island tutorial that introduces the polearm and the combo before you join the main world. Get through it, complete the early Aran storyline quests for free equips and EXP, then head out to the standard GMS training routes.

Because Aran is built for mobbing, you level fastest at maps with tight monster spawns where you can sweep packs without your combo dropping. Pair the natural 2x EXP with party play and the right party quests for big chunks of levels at the milestone ranges.

  • Early game: finish the Aran tutorial and intro quests, then grind nearby low-level maps with dense spawns.
  • Mid game: rotate into Party Quests for EXP and rewards, Kerning PQ, Ludibrium PQ (LPQ) and Monster Carnival (CPQ) are all great for Aran.
  • Use Monster Carnival to practise combo uptime in a controlled PvP-style arena while earning CP rewards.
  • Always pick the densest map your damage can clear safely, mob density beats raw map level for Aran XP/hour.

Bossing as an Aran

Aran is a strong melee bosser once your combo skills are maxed, but single-target fights ask you to manage the combo differently than mobbing. Build your count on summoned adds or the early phase, then keep it topped up so your finishers always land at high combo tiers.

On Zipangu the boss progression follows the classic GMS path. Bring potions, status-cure items, and the right elemental considerations, and party up for the harder fights.

  • Zakum: entered via the Zakum prequest chain and an Eye of Fire to reach the altar; watch for body summons and seal/debuff attacks.
  • Horntail: a multi-part head-and-tail fight that punishes status effects, bring Holy Symbol/Resist support and cleanse items.
  • Pink Bean: a high-end fight reached through the Temple of Time storyline; expect heavy damage and long DPS checks.
  • Black Mage storyline: the endgame narrative arc that ties the late-game bosses together, a long-term goal, not an early one.
  • Prep checklist: full HP/MP pots, all-cure/status items, the best polearm you can afford, and a party for Horntail and beyond.

Gearing Your Aran (No Pay-to-Win)

Zipangu is strictly no pay-to-win with a player-driven meso economy, so your power comes from gear you earn, craft, or trade for, not a cash shop. Prioritise a strong polearm (your single biggest damage source), then STR-focused armor and accessories, and scroll up over time.

Because rates are 1x Meso and 1x Drop, gear progression is meaningful. Run bosses and PQs for drops, sell extras on the player market, and reinvest into upgrades. Our RustHS anti-cheat keeps the economy clean so the mesos you earn hold their value.

  • Weapon first: the highest base-attack polearm you can wield and afford to scroll.
  • Then STR gear: hats, tops/bottoms or overalls, gloves, shoes, capes and accessories with STR and ATT.
  • Scroll conservatively early, save your good scrolls for clean, high-base equips.
  • Trade and sell on the player market, drops from bosses and PQs fund your upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aran a good class for beginners on Zipangu?

Yes. Aran has a guided beginner island tutorial, a simple pure-STR build, and forgiving melee mobbing, making it one of the friendliest classes to learn. The only skill to master is keeping your Combo Count alive, which becomes second nature within a few levels.

What stats should an Aran add?

Pure STR. Put every available AP into STR and leave DEX, LUK and INT at base, your natural stat gains and gear cover the polearm requirements, so you never need to manually add DEX.

How does the Aran combo system work in v117?

Every attack builds a Combo Count shown above your character. As the count rises it crosses thresholds that boost your damage and unlock stronger combo finisher skills. If you stop attacking the count resets, so the goal is continuous, uninterrupted attacking, using combo-maintenance skills to bridge between monster packs.

Is Zipangu free, and is it pay-to-win?

Zipangu is completely free to play and strictly no pay-to-win. It runs MapleStory v117.2 (GMS Big-Bang era) with fair 2x EXP / 1x Meso / 1x Drop rates, a player-driven meso economy, and custom RustHS anti-cheat. Download the client and join via our Discord to start playing.
